Ventall / Homage to the hand fan

Artwork: Ventall / Homage to the hand fan
Artists: Pepa Fos, José Manuel Alonso and José Manuel Ramos
Location: Garden located between Picanya and Antonio Machado streets.
Date: 1992

Iron sculpture awarded in 1992 in the Aldaia Artistic and Sculptural Interventions Competition.

The work represents the communication of the language of the fan by means of an abstraction of the undulating movement produced by opening and closing it, conceived from a renovating point of view.

This sculpture pays homage to the Aldaia fan, an element that is deeply rooted in Aldaia. It is a handcrafted jewel that perfectly combines art and functionality.

Aldaia still has 24 active fan handicraft companies, being the main Spanish producer. The fan artisans are grouped in the Guild of Master Fan Makers of Valencia, based in Aldaia, which manages the quality brand Spanish Artisan Fans (AEA).

The city is also home to the Aldaia Fan Museum (MUPA), the only monographic museum dedicated to the fan in Spain. Here we find an extensive representation of old and modern fans, with chronologies ranging from the 17th century to the present day, as well as a wide repertoire of traditional machinery, pieces and utensils typical of the fan making process. An extraordinary collection in which the different styles, fashions and materials used throughout its history can be appreciated.
